No. 6 in the rankings Alexander Zverev will face the experienced spaniard Fernando Verdasco tonight in the ATP Masters 1000.
This will be the first match in this tournament for the German since losing in the 1st round at Basel against Taylor Harry Fritz, a result that came by surprise as Zverev was the clear favorite to advance. After a really good week in Shanghai, it was expected that the player continued that good form in Switzerland but somehow crumbled under the pressure. Now he has the opportunity to redeem himself in one of the biggest tournaments of the year as he’s the clear favorite in his quarter to reach the semi-finals after Roger Federer withdrawal. Zverev had an up and down year, with his only title coming in clay at Geneva, an ATP 250 tournament. He’ll try to reach the same result as his last Masters in Shanghai where he reached the final, losing to arguably the best player in 2019, Daniil Medvedev.
On the other side, Fernando Verdasco comes from a comeback victory against Borna Coric, a player who is finding difficulties to find any rhythm late in the season, and is struggling to win matches against any kind of opponents. The Spaniard is always a hard player to play against, as he can turn up his level of play at any moment. Even at his late stages in his career, Verdasco has the game to trouble any top player, and if he comes with the right mindset, an upset could always happen. His biggest results this season came at Kitzbuhel and Eastbourne, where he reached the quarter-finals, neither were on hard court.
I expect Zverev to have a bounce back game against Verdasco and take the game on straight sets. The German is strong at these types of conditions and even reached the final at the ATP Nitto Finals in 2018. Verdasco struggled to take out Borna Coric on a 3-setter, a match that might have took a toll on his body this late in the season.
Alexander Zverev 2-0 @1.80
