Alexei Popyrin will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for the 1st round of the 2020 Australian Open.
The Australian native will certainly have the fans behind him when he faces the veteran Jo-Wilfried Tsonga tonight at Melbourne Arena. He hasn’t achieved the results he desired to start the season, as he lost on the 2nd round of Doha and on the 1st round in Adelaide. The youngster will have a hard challenge ahead, but if he keeps his composure during the initial set, he could’ve an opportunity to take something from this match, seeing how poor Tsonga’s been lately as well. Popyrin reached the 3rd round last season, his best result yet, and that’s probably the best he’ll achieve in this year’s Australian Open as Daniil Medvedev could be waiting in case he reaches that point.
Plagued by injuries in 2019, Tsonga has been looking to get back on track for quite some time, however, it’s not been easy for the Frenchman. With great runs at Melbourne throughout the years, the 34-year-old is hopeful of another deep run in order to revitalize his career. Popyrin could be a tough test, but a win here would mean a boost in his confidence, as he could likely face a weaker opponent on the following round. He went out early last season, with a 2nd round exit, so motivation should be high for Tsonga to do better this time around.
This is an interesting matchup, as both players don’t seem to be going through a very good moment. I’m expecting that they will drop a set to their opponent, with the match going to distance.
