Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas will battle it out today at the O2 Arena in London, in search for their first win in the group stage.
In a group composed by Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev as well, balance is the key word in a pretty even field. Any player can produce a win against any of their opposition, with Nadal being the most dangerous of the four. It remains to be seen if Daniil Medvedev will keep his hot streak since Wimbledon, where he displayed an incredible consistency, achieving the final or winning it all in every single tournament he took part of, except Paris, or if he will struggle and accuse his tired legs like in the previous Masters 1000 tournament.
For Stefanos Tsitsipas, he’s usually a tough opponent to beat for the Big Three himself. However, he never won against his rival, Daniil Medvedev. Last year, the Greek netted the ATP Next Gen Finals, but in 2019, he’s swimming with the big sharks in London. His indoor record is 11-4, ending up with a title in Marseille on one occasion. There is no doubt that Stefanos has the game to discuss the match toe-to-toe with the Russian, but a 5-0 H2H record for Daniil proves otherwise.
Their rivalry could go up a notch now that they face each other at the Nitto ATP Finals. No. 6 in the World Tsitsipas called Medvedev’s game boring after losing to him in the Shanghai Masters 1000.
“I don't mean to be rude at all, but it's just boring. It's boring. It's so boring that — I don't know."
The Russian quickly responded, “He [Tsitsipas] said my game is boring? For real? Well, I'm not going to argue with him. Everybody has their own style. If someone thinks it's boring—Ok, not a big deal. We are definitely not friends, nor are we enemies. We are colleagues, that's it."
It doesn’t get better than this at the last tournament of the season.
Even if their head-to-head is not close by any meanings, I’m expecting a much closer match in the Nitto ATP Finals. Daniil is the favorite for obvious reasons, however, Tsitsipas arrives in London on a good run of results and could pose serious trouble for the Russian.
