Dominic Thiem will face Felipe Meligeni in the 1st round of the Rio Open ATP 500.
Thiem’s last match was at the Australian Open Final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic in five-sets. He gets back to his preferred surface now to compete in the Rio Open, a prestigious tournament in Brazil. Safe to say he’s the clear cut favourite to not only win this match, but the whole tournament. His tougher opponent en route to the Final should be Casper Ruud, who’s won the Buenos Aires open last week. A straight set victory is expected for tonight’s match from the World’s No. 4.
On the other side of the net there will a Brazilian youngster who received a Wildcard for this tournament, Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues Alves. Used to play in Challengers and ITF, Meligeni will have a unique experience tonight, when he takes the court in his home country to take on Dominic Thiem, probably the 2nd best clay courter on the Tour at the moment. Only a miracle could see the 21-year-old advance to the next round, but he promised to put up a fight against the Austrian.
Thiem should have no problem handling Felipe Meligeni, and I’m expecting a quick match between the two players.
