Thiem called to defend the favoritism
Dominic Thiem and Jaume Munar will meet in the round of 16 of the ATP 500 Rio Open. The Austrian tennis player, number four in the world, enters the field with the advantage in the h2h against the Spanish, having won the two meetings already disputed against the 99th of the ATP ranking.
Dominic Thiem enters the field as a clear favorite for the final victory, not only in the match against Munar, but also in the tournament. The Austrian performed at a brutal level during the Australian Open and only the best Djokovic prevented him from winning his first Grand Slam. In his troubled debut at the Carioca tournament, Thiem was forced to play three sets to beat the home player Felipe Meligeni Rodrigues for 6-2, 4-6 and 6-1 ends. The goal now is to beat the Spaniard and keep favorable statistic - 3 games, 3 wins - all of them on clay.
Jaume Munar knows that he will have a very difficult mission to overtake in Rio, as he will be face to face with the second-best player on clay nowadays. The 99th in the ranking takes six wins and seven losses in 2020 and seeks to balance that factor in Rio. To reach the round of 16 Munar won in two very balanced sets the Italian Salvatore Caruso, 97th of the ATP.
Thiem's superior status gives him total favoritism to beat the Spaniard again and move forward to the quarter-finals.
