Feliciano Lopez will face his fellow countryman Roberto Bautista Agut on the 1st round of the 2020 Australian Open.
The Spanish veteran makes his debut at this year’s Australian Open coming off a decent run in the Auckland ATP 250, where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz. He’ll have a strong challenge ahead, as Bautista Agut is playing at a very high level at the moment, and given the fact that it’s a best-of-five match can pose some problems to Lopez. If his service is on, he could be a hard player to beat, but the consistency on the baseline from Agut should make the difference in their matchup. He’s losing the head-to-head 3-1, with his only win coming in hardcourt, giving him a little bit of hope for what’s to come on Monday. It’s not likely that Feliciano could make anything out of the match, but the mutual knowledge about each one’s game could be interesting to watch.
Roberto Bautista Agut arrives at the Australian Open in an incredible moment of form. He completed 6 matches for the ATP Cup, and won them all without dropping a single set. Some of those fixtures were against lesser ranked opponents, but still, it’s a great achievement. He could meet Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 4th round if there’s not an early upset for both sides, producing a showdown matchup with the Greek. If he were to advance, he would equal his best result in the tournament, probably lining up for a duel against Novak Djokovic in the Quarter-Finals. With the way the Spaniard’s playing, he could be a dark horse candidate in Melbourne.
Roberto Bautista Agut should have no problem leading with Feliciano Lopez in the 1st round. They’re going through different moments right now, and the level of play Agut is showing should be too much for Lopez to handle.
