The KAT-led Minnesota Timberwolves will receive the San Antonio Spurs tonight at Target Center in one of the best contests of the night.
The Timberwolves have been one of the surprising teams in this first three weeks of NBA basketball. Led by an incredible Karl Anthony-Towns and much improved Andrew Wiggins, they currently sit 8th place in the Western Conference, 2 games away from the top seed. One of the main headlines this season has been Wiggins. The forward is making big strides in his play style, an aspect that he was largely criticized last year, as he’s seen as one of the best talents in the league, but it looked like his Basketball IQ was pushing back his full potential. Playing at home, the Wolves should have enough to beat the Spurs, even though it’s projected to be a balanced game. If Lamarcus Aldridge has an off night, it will be hard for Popovich’s team to beat Ryan Saunders’ squad.
Gregg Popovich has been having problems with the Spurs this year, as they don’t seem to be as consistent as other years. They lost at home yesterday to a projected lottery team in Memphis Grizzlies. Having Dejounte Murray in limited minutes, hurts immensely the team, with him being arguably the best player on this Spurs team. DeRozan and Aldridge have been subpar so far to start the season, especially the former Toronto Raptor player, and they’ll need to up their level tonight if they want to make a game out of Minnesota.
You can never discount Gregg Popovich’s teams, but they’re clearly missing an identity to start the season to this Spurs team. Coming from a game yesterday, I’m expecting a tired squad for tonight, and most probably the Wolves will utilize that to their advantage.
