Rangers and FC Porto find themselves in a crucial moment in terms of their chances to qualify for the next stage of Europa League.
Two weeks ago, Steven Gerrard’s team went to Estadio do Dragão as the underdog, and when everyone thought that Porto would win that game easily, Rangers proved otherwise, running away with a point as they drew 1-1. That result gave them the chance to improve their chances of going through the group stage, even more if they could win tonight against a club that’s usually in Champions League latest stages. Rangers has been a pretty dominant team when playing in front of their fans, with 9 wins in 10 games, counting both domestic and european competitions. Rangers’ attack is one of the strongest points in the team, however, they’ve just conceded two goals across their last five games at Ibrox stadium. Alfredo Morales has been a man on a mission, scoring ten goals in his eleven Europa League matches so far, so FC Porto will need to keep an eye on the striker if they want to come away with a good result.
Sérgio Conceição's team has not been so consistent has his their last two seasons. They interchange from really good matches to poor showings, like the ones in Maritimo and at home against Desportivo das Aves. A loss here could mean an early exit from Europa League, something unthinkable for the Dragons, as they have the objective to try and win it all, respecting their history in the few times they dropped to the competition below Champions League. After two consecutive bad results against Feyenoord and Rangers, they look to bounce back in fashion here at Ibrox Stadium, and will probably feature their strongest squad for tonight. They’ve failed to score only one time away from home this season, so it’s expected for them to make some noise tonight and produce at least a goal.
This match has all the ingredients to produce goals for both sides. It will be interesting to see what kind of approach both managers use for tonight. Even though they could be more cautious, going for goals is not a bad option for this clash of giants.
