After a disappointing first match against Dominic Thiem, Roger Federer looks to bounce back today in a decisive match for Group Bjorn Borg.
The Swiss needs nothing but the win to have a chance to qualify for the next stage of the Nitto ATP Finals. Even though he’s not in the best shape possible, he should be able to take care of business when he faces Berrettini, a player that was stomped in his previous match by Novak Djokovic. In his previous 16 appearances at the World Tour Finals, Federer only once did not advance to the semi-final, and considering he faces the Serbian in his next match, this one comes as a must-win for him. Federer and Berrettini only encounter was at Wimbledon where the 38-year-old won comfortably by 3-0. Roger arrives at this match as the clear favorite, and anything besides a win, would be a big surprise.
Matteo Berrettini, on his first match ever at the ATP World Tour Finals, suffered a heavy loss to Novak Djokovic by 6-2, 6-1. He’ll try to deliver a better performance today when he faces another all-time great in Roger Federer. However, the scenario is not good for the Italian as the Swiss needs to notch a victory so he can remain fighting for a spot in the next stages of the tournament. Experience in these type on situations could give Federer a big advantage, leading to Berrettini crumbling under pressure. The No. 8 in the World will try to make something out of this match, but chances are slim.
Matteo Berrettini has nothing to lose against the Swiss, but even so, I expect an invigorated Roger Federer, who should be able to deliver in today’s match.
