Stan Wawrinka and Damir Dzumhur will clash in the 1st round of the 2020 Australian Open, scheduled to play on the Melbourne Arena.
Stan The Man will begin his 1st Grand Slam of the season taking on Damir Dzumhur, an opponent that he leads by 2-1 on head-to-head, as his two wins came on hardcourt. The 2014 champion usually plays some of his best tennis at the Australian Open, and he could make a nice run here, building confidence until his projected 4th round matchup with Daniil Medvedev. Coming from an unexpected loss in Doha against Corentin Moutet, the Swiss will try to have a solid exhibition tonight and get off on the right foot.
On the other hand, Damir Dzumhur arrives at the Australian Open after a disappointing tournament in the Bendigo Challenger. The 27-year-old will have a tough task ahead, as he will face off against Stan Wawrinka, a player who already left his mark here, winning the Grand Slam in 2014. Even though his opponent is not as consistent as he was a few years ago, it should be enough for him to win the match, unless Damir has one of his best matches ever. His best record in Melbourne is the 3rd round, from last year and 2014, but it’s hard to see him reach such result this year.
Dzumhur’s recent form is not good at the moment, and if he doesn’t raise his level tonight, I could see an easy match for Stan Wawrinka.
