The Cleveland Cavaliers were projected to be one of the worst teams of the 2019/2020 season. And they’re not disappointing in that regard. Leaded by Kevin Love, who was out for some weeks due to injury, the Ohio team is lottery-bound once again, as they’ll try to hit the jackpot in Anthony Edwards or James Wiseman at the 2020 NBA draft.
Tied for the last spot in the Eastern Conference with the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks, the Cavs register one particular bad statistic this season. Their assist leader is Darius Garland with 2.9 APG (!). Since the creation of the 24-second shot clock in 1954/1955, that no team had an assist leader with such a low average, describing what has been the Cavaliers regular season until now.
Worst team leaders in assists since the 24-second shot clock creation:
1. Darius Garland, 2.9 Assists Per Game, Cleveland Cavaliers (2019/2020)
2. Marcelo Huertas, 3.4 Assists Per Game, Los Angeles Lakers (2015/2016)
3. Tony Parker, 3.5 Assists Per Game, San Antonio Spurs (2017/2018)
Darius Garland Averaging Fewest Assists for Team Leader Since 1951: https://t.co/FDuTsZ8Ogy— Cavaliers Nation (@WeAreCavsNation) December 15, 2019
Even though Cleveland has the worst record for a team leader average in assists, they’re not standing close to the worst averaging assists team ever since the shot clock creation. That could be explained due to the much faster pace that the game is played nowadays, as teams are scoring at a higher rate. Jim Boylen’s team stands at 28th in the league in the Assists column, behind the Knicks and the Blazers.
Teams with the fewest assists since the 24-second shot clock creation:
1. 15.64 APG, Atlanta Hawks (1998/1999)
2. 16.40 APG, Los Angeles Clippers (1998/1999)
3. 16.60 APG, Minneapolis Lakers (1956/1957)
4*. 21.30 APG, Cleveland Cavaliers (2019/2020)
