Kuldeep Yadav becomes first Indian to take two ODI hat-tricks
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul starred with the bat, scoring centuries, while Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami led with the ball which helped India beat the West Indies by 107 runs in the second ODI in Vizag on Wednesday. The opening pair put on 227 runs as India piled up a formidable total after being asked to bat first and they eventually finished with 387/5 Rohit led the onslaught with 159 off 138 balls, while Rahul made 102. The fourth-wicket partnership between Shreyas Iyer and, Rishabh Pant included a 73 runs stand. Iyer scored 53 of 32 and, Pant scored 39 from 16 deliveries. While chasing West Indies began cautiously with Evin Lewis and Shai Hope, the openers put together 61 before Lewis was dismissed. West Indies were reeling at 86/3 before Pooran and Hope led the counter-attack put on a 106-run partnership at a good pace. But in front of the Indian bowling attack, West Indies were bowled out for 280 in 43.3 overs.
With West Indies looking fight back against India’s massive target of 388 in Visakhapatnam, wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav (3/52 in 10 overs) marked a return to form with a hat-trick in the 33rd over of the innings. The left-arm spinner picked up the wickets of Shai Hope (78 off 85 balls), Jason Holder (11) and, Alzarri Joseph (0). The achievement makes him the only Indian bowler to take two ODI hat-tricks, with the first having come against Australia in 2017 at the Eden Gardens. Shami too had a chance to take a hat-trick a little before Yadav managed it. Mohammed Shami (3/39 in 7.3 overs) removed the dangerous Nicholas Pooran (75 off 47 balls) and skipper Keiron Pollard (0) off successive deliveries to spark a West Indies collapse. West Indies bowling attack looks helpless in front of destructive Indian batting unit, Sheldon Cottrell took 2 wickets but also gave 83 runs in 9 overs, Alzarri Joseph gave 68 and, Keemo Paul gave 62 runs in 9 overs respectively.
