Islamabad crashed out without reaching the knockout stages for the 1st time.
Jonny Bairstow, Mark Wood, and James Anderson have all been included in England’s 17-man squad for their upcoming Test series against South Africa. Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, last played internationally in the first Ashes Test against Australia at Edgbaston in August before pulling up after bowling only four overs. Bairstow was omitted from the squad for the recent series against New Zealand after averaging 20.25 with the bat in nine Tests this year. He was subsequently called up to England’s squad as cover for Joe Denly, who suffered an ankle injury. Anderson and Wood both missed the New Zealand series due to injury and are currently in South Africa taking part in a specialist pace bowling camp as they return to full fitness, with Bairstow also present. Fast bowler Wood is also back in the fold after sitting out of the 2-2 Ashes draw with a knee injury and side strain suffered during England's victorious World Cup campaign. "It is not predicted that Mark (Wood) will be available for selection for the earliest matches," said England national selector Ed Smith.
England national selector Ed Smith confirmed that off-spinner Moeen Ali remains unavailable after asking to take a break from Test cricket. England is considering an all-out seam attack for some of the Tests in South Africa. Warwickshire opener Dom Sibley retains his place in the squad despite two unremarkable Tests in New Zealand. He will be given further opportunities to prove he is the long-term opening partner for Rory Burns. Both Chris Woakes and Sam Curran make the squad after decent showings in New Zealand. England will play 4 Tests, 3 ODIs and, 3 T20Is matches against New Zealand starting from 26th December. England squad: Joe Root (c), James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Matthew Parkinson, Ollie Pope, Dominic Sibley, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.
