Islamabad crashed out without reaching the knockout stages for the 1st time.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Friday firmly backed the struggling Rishabh Pant, calling the wicketkeeper-batsman a “superb player” who will mature slowly and do just fine. The 21-year-old is having a tough time in the ongoing T20 International series against Bangladesh and has struggled to make an impact both with the bat and behind the stumps. But Ganguly supported him. It was only a while ago when Pant was seen as the perfect replacement for MS Dhoni as the finisher. After an explosive IPL season, Pant became a hot topic of discussion and a serious contender to keep the wickets for the Men in Blue at the international level. He earned praises for his defiant innings but was heavily criticized for his poor shot selection and irresponsible approach at crucial stages. He got a start and gave it all away. Pant is under immense pressure and has to deliver in the upcoming matches against Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara has advised under-fire Rishabh Pant to keep thins simple while batting as well as keeping if he wants to regain his lost confidence after a string failure. Sangakkara felt Pant needs to be "neat and tidy behind the stumps” as the youngster has been struggling in the ongoing T20 series against Bangladesh also. In the first T20I match against Bangladesh, Pant copped criticism for bad DRS calls. In the second game, the 21-year-old stumper once again found himself in a spot when he missed out on an easy stumping chance off leg-spinner Chahal to hand Liton Das a life. "As a wicketkeeper, it's important to be neat and tidy behind the stumps which will give him confidence and put him a position to help his captain in calling for reviews,” said the former Sri Lankan captain who was a clean customer behind the stumps throughout his career. Former India batting stalwart VVS Laxman agreed with Sangakkara but said Pant has things to worry about as fas as batting is concerned.
