Islamabad crashed out without reaching the knockout stages for the 1st time.
There were so many parallels between the World Cup 2019 final and the T20I series decider. A rain-curtailed 11-overs per side game. While batting first New Zealand scored 146 runs. Chasing a total of 147 runs England needed 16 runs off the last over. Earlier, Eoin Morgan won the toss and elected to field first. English bowlers were taken to cleaners by Kiwi openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro. Guptill scored his half-century from just 20 deliveries whereas Munro scored 46 runs from 21 deliveries. Tim Seifert contributed too with 16-ball 39 but failed to deliver in the super over. Chasing a target of 147 in 11 overs, England kept losing wickets but kept the required run rate within reach. Jonny Bairstow scored 47 runs from 18 deliveries but Chris Jordan was the hero of the game scoring 12 runs from just 3 deliveries to tie the match and then restricting New Zealand to just eight runs when they needed 18 runs to win the game in super over.
There were many Deja Vu moments in the T20I series decider when compared to World Cup 2019 final. On both occasions, Martin Guptill scored just one run in the super over. In the Super Over, Morgan and Bairstow smashed Tim Southee all over the park to post 17/0. While chasing 18 runs, Tim Seifert started strongly but England bowler Chris Jordan bowled some beauty to snatch the win away from the Black Caps. Jordan restricted them for just eight runs and took 3 wickets. In the super over, Boult was patrolling in the outfield on both occasions. The left-arm fast bowler came close to catching the ball in the World Cup final. He took Ben Stokes’ catch but went over the line off the fourth ball of the final over. Today, Jordan’s shot for six was just outside the reach of Boult as he dived on the boundary to take the catch or push the ball back into play. Both were decisive moments of the game which happened off the fourth ball of the last over of the run chase. Bairstow was named Man of the Match for his heroic innings up front in the second innings.
