The opening day of the new season of India's premier first-class tournament saw big names like Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari among the runs. Team India stars had mixed outings on the opening day of the new Ranji Trophy season which got underway across the country on Monday, December 9. Prithvi Shaw, playing his 1st Ranji Trophy match since serving his doping ban, smashed 66 from 62 balls as Mumbai got off to a flyer. India vice-captain and senior batsman Ajinkya Rahane top-scored on Day 1 for Mumbai with a 145-ball 79. Robin Uthappa hit a hundred (102 off 221 balls) to lead Kerala's charge against Delhi. Cheteshwar Pujara didn't have the best of starts to his Ranji Trophy campaign, being dismissed for 2 against Himachal, while Hanuma Vihari came up with a fighting 83 against Vidarbha with Shardul Thakur also coming up with a handy 64. Mayank Agarwal got off to a good start but couldn't capitalize on it as he fell for 43. Karnataka’s Devdutt Padikkal scored 78 on the first day of the match against Tamil Nadu.
The action flowed thick and fast, with some teams posting commanding totals while others were bowled out before stumps on the first day itself. Rex Singh, the 19-year-old left-handed allrounder from Manipur, had a day to remember as he bagged 8 for 22 to bowl Mizoram out for 65, and later starred with the bat scoring an unbeaten 58. Puducherry’s experienced left-arm spinner Sagar Udeshi, who picked up 6-50 to bowl out Bihar for 173. 19-year old Rajesh Mohanty's 6-47 helped Odisha bowl Chhattisgarh out for 134, although they also struggled with the bat later as they went into Stumps at 48 for 3. R Ashwin, meanwhile, bowled 32 overs and conceded 68 runs while picking up the wicket of Pavan Deshpande.
