Islamabad crashed out without reaching the knockout stages for the 1st time.
New Zealand continued to fight their way back into the Test, the sight of Kane Williamson ticking the scoreboard over to 50 for the loss of a single wicket in the final over before tea. An unruffled stand between Williamson and Jeet Raval added to New Zealand's sense of contentment after Tim Southee had sparked an England collapse during the morning session. English bowler Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad bowled tight opening spells. After a cagey first day, New Zealand's bowlers took the game by its scruff despite 91 from Ben Stokes and a few late volleys from Jos Buttler. England recorded their highest score in the first innings of an overseas Test since the 2017-18 Ashes but lost their last six wickets for the addition of 76 runs, Southee and Neil Wagner claiming five of them. Southee, who finished with 4 for 88. Although England did manage to cross 350 a few balls later, doing so for the first time in the first innings of a Test overseas since Melbourne 2017-18, Wagner wrapped things up shortly after by having Stuart Broad play on after a concerted short-ball assault.
The tourists had actually resumed in a positive fashion, with Stokes and Pope extending their overnight partnership to 74. Stokes appeared set for his third century in five Tests, picking up regular boundaries as he moved into the 90s, only for Ross Taylor to brilliantly atone for dropping him on day one. With New Zealand having shifted their cordon wide, Taylor had to react instinctively to a chance flying through regulation first slip but clung on one-handed high to his right. Kane Williamson had initially held Southee back. But once Southee had pried out Stokes, he harnessed the conditions expertly to rip through England's middle order. With Leach nearly running out Buttler off the first ball he faced, England were in serious danger of folding for around 300. But Henry Nicholls could not manage a direct hit from the covers with the batsman nowhere in the frame, and Buttler hinted at his destructive capabilities a couple of overs later.
