Islamabad crashed out without reaching the knockout stages for the 1st time.
Neil Wagner's fiery burst on the final day piloted New Zealand to a remarkable come-from-behind victory against England in the first Test. The visitors were cleaned up for 197 in their second innings to lose by an innings and 65 runs. For England, it was a case of a new coach, a new approach, but largely the same result. England needed to bat for most of the day in order to save the test with a draw, England lost four wickets during the afternoon session. However, Jofra Archer (29) and Sam Curran (30*) gave England slim hopes of saving the Test with a 59-run stand. Wagner claimed three of them in a five-over burst before tea that ripped the guts out of England's resistance. New Zealand have not lost a Test at home since 2017, and the way they wrestled control in this match - through the record-breaking feats of BJ Watling and Mitchell Santner and a concerted team effort with the ball. Watling was named Man of the Match for his marathon double-hundred.
Trent Boult is likely to miss the second Test of New Zealand's series against England after leaving the field due to a pain in the right-hand side of his ribs on the fifth day of the first Test. Boult, who took 1-97 in the first innings, bowled just one over on the fifth and final day in Mount Maunganui before leaving the field. The fast bowler will have an MRI scan on Tuesday, with the second and final Test of the series starting on Thursday. In his absence, his fellow left-arm quick Neil Wagner stepped up with five wickets to seal an innings-and-65-run victory. If left-armer Boult, likely to be replaced by Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry, who are other seam-bowling options in the 15-man squad. "A lot was taken out of both teams in this Test," Kane Williamson, New Zealand's captain, said. "It was a really tough effort for long periods. But we have that squad of 15 and all the guys will meet up in Hamilton and we will have to assess the fitness of everybody."
