England captain Joe Root brought up his first Test century in more than nine months just when it was most needed on the third day of the second Test against New Zealand to give the visitors hope to draw the series. England captain Root ended the day with an unbeaten 114 but when rain ended play 16 overs early the visitors were 269 for five. Ollie Pope was unbeaten on four. England started the third day in a desperate position at 39-2 in reply to New Zealand's first innings of 375. With the support of opener Rory Burns, who posted his second Test century and was out immediately afterward for 101. With Root and Burns putting on 177 for the third wicket, England found a partnership they had been searching for in their attempt to follow the same recipe New Zealand used to win the first Test. Burns and Root controlled the first session but England battled through the second session as early dismissal of Ben Stoke and debutant Zak Crawley.
Root started the day six not out with Burns on 24, they battled throughout the day and gave a partnership of 177 runs. After losing Rory Burns wicket England lose two quick wickets. At the end of the day, they trailed New Zealand by 106 with 5 wickets in hand. On day 3 New Zealand missed quite a few chances, they messed up a run out chance of Burns. Burns survives as Kiwi wicketkeeper did not manage to collect the ball, it was third life for Rory Burns in his knock. Root had a fright at 47 when he was given out caught by wicketkeeper BJ Watling from the bowling of Daryl Mitchell but successfully challenged the decision and replays showed the ball missed the bat and grazed the pad.
