UEFA admits the Champions League and the Europa League cancellation06 April 2020 / Rui Sousa
UEFA admits to cancel both tournaments if it is not possible to finish until August 3.
This Wednesday the sixth and final matchday of the UEFA Champions League group stage was completed, and Atlético de Madrid and Atalanta were the last qualified teams for the round of 16 of the tournament. In this way, and for the first time in the history of the competition, the 16 teams that will play the knockout stages belong to the five major European leagues, which marks a growing difference between the power of the great teams of the continent and the rest.
Four Spanish teams - Barcelona, ??Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, and Valencia -, four English - Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham -, three Germans - Bayern, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig -, three Italians - Juventus, Napoli and Atalanta - and Two French - PSG and Olympique Lyon - will shape next round. There will be no Portuguese, no Dutch, no Turks, no Russians or any other country with representation in the group stage. The economic and sporting power of the Premier League, Serie A, Bundesliga, La Liga and Ligue 1 moves them further and further away from the rest.
A peculiarity of this campaign is the 'poker' that Spain has completed towards the Istanbul final. All their teams have gone through from the group stage, Barcelona and Valencia as winners and Real Madrid and Atlético as runners-up, and will look for opponents for the round of 16 in next Monday’s draw in Nyon in which they cannot face teams from the same country or those who they shared group with. La Liga, for the first time since 2012/13, will see all its teams in the knockout stages as the Premier League, which continues to show in Europe that it is the strongest league right now and has put all its representatives in the Round of 16 for the third consecutive season.

Monday's draw will determine the clashes that will take place on February 18-19 and 25-26 for the first leg matches, and March 10-11 and 17-18 for the second leg games. Atlético de Madrid and Atalanta were the last to qualify. The deeds of the Italians, who go to the las 16 in their first participation and after losing the first three games, makes them one of the most desired teams of the second pot together with Depay's Lyon.
The Bergamo team could be measured to all the group winners except Manchester City and Juventus, while the exceptions for Lyon are PSG and Leipzig. Liverpool, Barcelona, ??Bayern Munich, and Valencia complete that first pot, while in the second there are also great teams such as Real Madrid, Mourinho’s Tottenham, Chelsea, the new Gattuso’s Napoli, and Borussia Dortmund. The show is guaranteed and only the confrontations need to be known so that all teams begin to dream about lifting the most important trophy in European football.
