This Thursday the fifth matchday of the UEFA Europa League group stage took place and was completed with a painful defeat for Arsenal. In addition, Manchester United also lost, while Sevilla, Roma, Porto, and Sporting achieved important victories with different objectives on the horizon. With APOEL, AZ, Braga, Gent, LASK, Sporting, Wolfsburg and Wolves going through to the next phase, we review the highlights of the day in the second European football competition.
The doubts continue for the ‘gunners’ and for Unai Emery, who added more problems in their continental match to their irregular career in the Premier League. In this case, and after starting in the lead with an Aubameyang strike before the break, they ended up losing 1-2 at home against Eintracht Frankfurt after a brace by the Japanese Daichi Kamada turned the scoreboard and left the Spanish coach in a very delicate situation. The London team remains at the top of Group F, but Eintracht is now only one point behind, while Standard Liege has three less and will receive Arsenal on the last matchday.
Manchester United also lost, although in this case Solskjaer's men were already qualified and played with a team full of youngsters. The match against Astana, who didn’t have any points so far, was opened by Jesse Lingard in the first half, but the goals of Shomko and Bernard in the second half confirmed a new comeback. For the statistics, United presented its youngest team in a European match with an average of 22 years and 26 days old.
In other games of the day, Rome achieved an important victory and now depends on itself to be in the second phase. Paulo Fonseca’s men thrashed Istanbul Basaksehir 0-3 with goals of Veretout, Kluivert and Dzeko and a great performance by Lorenzo Pellegrini, and now they add 8 points in Group J, matched with the leader Borussia Mönchengladbach and with one point more than the Turks. On the last day, the already eliminated Austrian Wolfsberger will visit the Italian capital.
Sporting Lisbon also closed the night with a win with a brilliant performance by Bruno Fernández, author of two goals and two assists, and beat PSV 4-0 at the José Alvalade Stadium. The victory qualifies the Portuguese for the round of 32, while also eliminating Mark van Bommel’s PSV, in the midst of crisis. Sporting, leader of group D with 12 points, will fight for the first place on the last matchday in a direct duel against LASK Linz, second with 10 points.
In addition, Sevilla continued with its overwhelming pace and added its fifth victory in the same number of games after beating Qarabag 2-0 with goals from Brian Gil and Dabbur. Julen Lopetegui's team had already clinched first position in Group A and will now seek a full house of victories against APOEL on its last match. The situation was much more complicated for Porto, who played the rest of their options in Switzerland against Young Boys, and there Aboubakar appeared to rescue his team and come back from Fassnacht’s initial goal with two strikes of his own. The Portuguese club climbs to second place in Group G but is tied at 8 points with the Swiss team, which is third. Glasgow Rangers is one point above both after a 2-2 draw against Feyenoord, and on the last day, Porto will receive the Dutch, who also have options with their 5 points.
