The defender failed to adapt to Conte's tactical system and could leave in the next transfer window.
Karin Benzema continues to enlarge his legend both in Real Madrid and in the Champions League. On Wednesday night the French striker scored two goals in the 6-0 win over Galatasaray to become the third top scorer of ‘Los Blancos’ in the European Cup ahead of the great Alfredo di Stéfano, while also continuing to expand his numbers and established himself as one of the biggest active scorers in the top continental football competition.
The two goals against the Turkish champion meant Benzema's first two goals in the Champions League this season, in a campaign in which he already has seven celebrations in La Liga. His double allows him to beat Di Stéfano as the third best scorer in the history of Real Madrid in Europe with 50 goals, so now he only has Raúl ahead, who scored 66, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who with 105 in Madrid and 127 in total remains at the top of the ranking.
On Wednesday night at the Bernabéu, his goals came after the assists from Rodrygo, the big star of the night with his hat-trick, and Carvajal, which allows Benzema to reach the figure of 62 goals, adding the 12 he scored with Lyon, in the Champions League, establishing himself as the third top active scorer of the competition, only behind Cristiano and Messi (113), and the fourth in the general standings again behind Raul, which adds 71. Further behind are Lewandowski with 58 and Van Nistelrooy with 56, in an exclusive list for legendary strikers.
The Champions League has become one of the favorite competitions for Benzema, who has been playing the tournament for 14 consecutive seasons, ten with the Madrid shirt and four with Olympique Lyonnais. His debut came 14 years ago, after he was summoned for the first time for the European Cup in November 2005 with 17 years, although on that occasion and precisely in the Santiago Bernabéu he remained on the bench. He would finally do it two weeks later against Rosenborg.
“His numbers speak for him. He is a player that those who like football cannot deny his quality. It is important for the team, to partner with everybody, he does very well. Nothing has changed without Cristiano, only that now Karim is more mature. He is a father and well, many things have happened to him lately that are reflected in the field,” Zidane explained about his number 9, before referring to the record. “I am very happy for Karim. It is true that he has surpassed a legend of this club like Di Stéfano. He is already like Cristiano in the history of this club. It's something amazing what he does, and you just have to enjoy and take advantage of it.”
Finally, it was Benzema himself who left his opinion on the game, his goals and the current situation of the team. “I don't consider myself a legend of Real Madrid, but when I signed for this club this was only a dream for me. I am happy and I hope to score many more goals. Right now I have a lot of confidence and also a lot of experience in this club, and I will help my teammates in everything I can," said the scorer before adding: "I don't know if it is the best game of the season, but we have scored six goals and we have received none. We're partying today."
