3 Academy prospects Paris Saint-Germain didn’t capitalize03 April 2020 / Miguel Coelho
Paris Saint-Germain has an history of wasting their youth talent. Who are they?
Eden Hazard accomplished last summer one of the goals he had for a long time: to play with Real Madrid. "It was a dream. As a child it was always the club I supported. Zidane was my idol. The stadium, when I saw it on TV, was magical. The white shirt, impeccable." This is how the Belgian winger described his feeling towards the Spanish club in a recent interview with L'Equipe, in which he also recognized the difficult moments he had to live in his first months in the Spanish capital.
Hazard: "The first 2-3 months at Real Madrid were not as I wanted them to be. Zidane told me to remain calm, 'Be happy'. He goes straight to the point, he loves his players. You feel that the team is happy for him being the coach." pic.twitter.com/LxQxCGloXp— M•A•J (@Ultra_Suristic) November 22, 2019
"I could have signed before. When I was in Lille, that possibility already existed. But I wanted to try England. It was easier than in Spain. I was only 21 years old. Contacts began two or three years ago when I got injured with the national team. After World Cup 2018, I wanted to come, but Chelsea said no. And I also didn't want to leave Chelsea in a bad way. I've always been well with all my clubs," Hazard recalled in the French newspaper about the process of his arrival to Madrid.
But his dream finally came true and the Belgian met a new world. "When you go to the locker room, you feel that the players are only there to win. You meet the fans who tell you every day that you have to win the Champions League. It's a culture," Hazard said before talking about who was his idol and today is his coach: "As children, we went to the park and, with my brothers, we tried to do the same as Zidane. The first time I spoke with him was in the European Cup in 2016. He said: 'It would be good that you came’, and when Zidane calls you, it's serious! ‘We'll see you one day if you come to Madrid’, he said. And that stayed in my head," continued the former Chelsea player.
"The first two or three months at Real Madrid were not as I wanted. And Zidane told me to remain calm. 'Be happy', he repeated. He goes straight to the point. He loves his players. You feel that the group is happy that he is the coach. Even those who do not play. This is where you see that he understands what the players feel, because he has been one," Hazard said about his complicated start in the club and the support of the French coach, and both also had to endure the accusations that the Belgian arrived in Madrid with overweight. "It is true. I will not hide it. When I am on vacation, I am on vacation. Otherwise, I would never have a break. I am a type of person who catches weight fast and then loses it fast too. When I was 18, in Lille, I weighed 72 or 73 kilos. Then, when I increased muscle mass, I reached 75. This summer I weighed 80 kilos. But I lost everything in ten days."
Once the first moments of complications were over, Hazard showed an improvement in recent weeks, and the player sees it, although it is far from being satisfied. "I am satisfied with the last month. The only thing that is wrong are the statistics," he told L'Equipe, before speaking again about the shock that meant his arrival at Real Madrid for his life. "I discovered another world. On the plane, when I came, all my brothers asked me what I was going to do. 'Be careful, if you fail, everyone will annoy you,' Thorgan told me."
Finally, Hazard also spoke about the interest of other teams before his arrival in Spain, and the main protagonist was none other than PSG, although the French club met the refusal of the Belgian, who does not forget his origins. “They often wanted to recruit me, but I didn't want to go back to Ligue 1 to another club other than Lille. And I always told them no. In my head, it was clear. If I return to France, it will be to Lille," said the 28-year-old footballer who finally opted for Real Madrid, and that today is trying to find his best level and return the confidence that ‘Los Blancos’ have placed in him.
