Pep Guardiola is one of the most successful managers ever. With multiple titles in every club he coached, he made people fall in love with the way his teams performed on the pitch, more known by “tiki-taka”. FC Barcelona’s team from 2008 through 2012 is probably the best ever, according to analysts and players opinions. During that span he won 2 Champions Leagues, 3 La Liga titles, 2 Spanish Cups, 3 Spanish Super Cups, 2 UEFA Super Cups and 2 FIFA Club World Cups. Quite impressive for his first stint as a professional coach.
The Champions League is the maximum trophy for both the players and the managers, and even though he won two with Barcelona, it was expected that he would have more in his curriculum by now. So why is Guardiola failing in the last years regarding the main European competition?

His squads have been one of the best in Europe at both Bayern Munich and Manchester City, but he hasn’t reached a single final since his days in Spain. With an impressive achievement of finishing his Champions League groups in 1st place 10 times out of 11, Guardiola’s teams perform much better when there’s more matches to be disputed than on knockout stages. And why is that? One reason could be that opposing managers started to understand much better Pep’s philosophy and his way of displaying his squad on the pitch, nullifying a based-possession team with deadly counters. The other possible reason is that there’s no Lionel Messi outside of Barcelona. Even though Barcelona had an incredible squad back in the days, Messi was the main unlocker to some of their problems when facing other powerhouses in Europe.
Almost out of contention domestically, with Liverpool dominating the Premier League, will Guardiola totally focus on the Champions League this here and prove everybody wrong? While City’s project was to be the strongest club in England, his hire involved big stakes in the Champions League as well. This is the year for the Spaniard to show if he’s capable of doing it.
