3 Academy prospects Paris Saint-Germain didn’t capitalize03 April 2020 / Miguel Coelho
Paris Saint-Germain has an history of wasting their youth talent. Who are they?
This Saturday many of the great teams in Europe returned to their respective league competitions and fulfilled their role as favorites to add three new points to their title quests. Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Bayern in Germany, PSG in France, Inter in Italy and Chelsea in England all met the predictions, and we reviewed the highlights in the five major European leagues.
Real Madrid continues with its recovery process and, after beating Galatasaray during the week in the Champions League, now defeated Eibar 0-4 as a visitor to confirm its improvement. In Ipurúa, the best of the season of Zidane’s side was seen, and before the half hour mark they already won by three goals of difference. Karim Benzema led the victory with two goals and placed himself as the top scorer of the championship with 9 goals, while Sergio Ramos and Fede Valverde, with his first official goal for Madrid, completed the win.
Just behind Benzema in the list of top scorers is already Leo Messi, the other great protagonist of the matchday in Spain, since with his hat-trick against Celta he led the 4-1 victory of the Catalan team to reach eight goals in this edition of La Liga. Busquets completed Barca’s win, who recovered after the 0-0 draw against Slavia during the week. The team led by Ernesto Valverde continues to lead the standings for his best goal difference over Real Madrid, while Atlético de Madrid could be one point away if they beat Espanyol this Sunday.
The spotlights in German football were located on the classic between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, but once again there were too many differences between both teams, and the Bavarian side ended up beating their great rival by 4-0. Bayern's superiority is not new when they receive Dortmund at Allianz Arena, since the wide margins are repeated for 5 seasons now: 5-1 in 2015/16, 4-1 in 2016/17, 6-0 in 2017/18 and 5-0 in 2018/19. Nor were there any surprises regarding the star of the night, since Robert Lewandowski continues with his magnificent form and scored two goals, the first one to open the match in the 17th minute, and one more in the second half to continue breaking all records.
In this campaign the Bayern striker has scored in the 11 matchdays of the Bundesliga, becoming the first player to achieve it, while he is also the first one to score in six consecutive 'Der Klassiker' in the German league. In addition, he is the top historical scorer of the Bayern-Dortmund in the Bundesliga with 17 goals, and already exceeded the scoring start of Gerd Müller, who in the 1968/69 season made 15 goals in the first 11 games, while the Polish already has 16. With the triumph the Bavarians are third in the table one point away of Borussia Mönchengladbach, leader of the tournament that has one less game and will play today against Werder Bremen, while Dortmund goes down to fifth place and could lose up to three more positions in the matches that will complete the matchday this Sunday.
In Italy, the fight between Juventus and Inter continues, as the Milan team won 2-1 against Hellas Verona on Saturday. Antonio Conte’s team began losing the match against a good rival that proved why they fight for European places in this campaign. It was in the 19th minute when Hellas came forward through a penalty from Valerio Verre, and they were close to get a prize from their visit to San Siro, but in the 65th minute Matías Vecino finally established the partial draw. On the end of the game it was Nicolo Barella who with a great shot gave the three points to Inter to place them in the Italian football leadership.
Juventus will have the opportunity to regain the first position this Sunday when they face Milan in a great game despite the terrible moment its rival is going through, what left them 13th in the table. For its part, Napoli still cannot find the way under the command of Carlo Ancelotti, equaled 0-0 against Genoa at home and is already outside of the European positions. Lazio-Lecce and Parma-Roma are other interesting meetings that will take place this Sunday in Serie A.
The French league remains the most unequal among the great championships in Europe, as PSG finds no rival in the fight for the title. This time they got rid of Brest with more problems than expected thanks to a last goal from Mauro Icardi. The Argentine this time left his place in the initial lineup to the recovered Edinson Cavani but finished defining the match after entering from the bench. His compatriot Ángel Di María opened the scoring at the end of the first half with his eighth goal of the season, but Samuel Grandsir tied the game in the 72nd minute and set off the alarms in the Parisian team. In the end Icardi appeared, scored his ninth goal in the last eight games with PSG and gave three new points to Thomas Tuchel’s men.
PSG has 30 points in 13 matchdays, with 10 wins and three losses, but has an advantage of nine points over an Angers who is second at least until Sunday. Nantes and Marseille, rivals of greater entity, could rest eight points away if they achieve a victory this Sunday, although both will have hard challenges acting at home against Saint-Etienne and Olympique Lyon, respectively.
Everyone in English football look into this Sunday's duel between the two main animators of the competition in recent years: Liverpool and Manchester City. But Saturday's meetings left important results, as both Leicester and Chelsea achieved victories that allowed them to overtake Pep Guardiola's men in the standings. The 'Foxes' are second after beating a traumatized Arsenal 2-0 thanks to goals from Vardy and Maddison, two men who live a great moment, while the 'gunners' add five consecutive games without winning between all competitions and, in addition, they were eliminated of the League Cup.
For its part, Chelsea continues to improve and already has six consecutive victories in the Premier after beating Crystal Palace 2-0, matching Leicester with 26 points to be five behind Liverpool. Frank Lampard’s team have neglected the irregularity of the beginning of the season and it is largely due to the connection between Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic, authors of the goals this Saturday. The English striker adds 10 goals in the league and leads the ranking of top scorers with Vardy, while the young American begins to show all his talent and has scored goals in his last three games.
