This week Vinicius scored his first goal in the Champions League with Real Madrid in the victory against Brugge and minutes later in the mixed zone he evidenced that he is not worried about scoring. Questioned about his aim, which is always on everyone's lips, Vinicius put the example of Raheem Sterling, a player who has incredibly improved his scoring numbers over the years. "Sterling also had issues to score with City. I left Brazil very early and I'm working hard to do great things," said the Brazilian.

And Vinicius is not wrong. With 18 years old, the age with which the Brazilian arrived at Real Madrid, Sterling completed his first season in Liverpool’s first team. That was a year in which Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League and was eliminated in the first knockout round in the Europa League, and the English international added two goals and six assists in 36 games with the ‘Reds’. Numbers that do not improve those of Vinicius in his first year with the Spanish giants. Just last year, the youngster scored three goals with Real Madrid - one more than Raheem - and doubled the number of assists (12) of the English winger in the 29 games he played.
Sterling shone with his own light in the 2013/14 season, accompanying Coutinho and Luis Suarez in a Liverpool that fought until the end for the Premier League title with City when that fateful Gerrard slip happened. Sterling's numbers that season were 11 goals and 12 assists. However, at this stage of the season, the current City player has added three goals and two assists with his team, very similar numbers to those Vinicius has accomplished so far in this campaign with two goals and one assist. In his last year in Liverpool, Sterling scored 10 goals and gave 11 assists and in his first year at Manchester, the thing was very similar with one more goal and one more assist, while in 2016/17 he went back to 10 goals, in what would be the last season before his scoring explosion with the arrival of Guardiola.
In the Spanish manager’s first year, Sterling's numbers soared to 23 goals, accompanied by 17 assists. Figures that improved last year when for the first time he reached 25 goals and also raising his assists’ record (18). This season his 15 goals in just 22 games place him as the team’s top goalscorer and are also setting his best average record as a professional.
"You have to think if you want to dribble 10 rivals and then do nothing or be someone who helps your team to win", Sterling answered when he was asked about his amazing scoring progression, and Vinicius is trying to find a similar outcome. Comparing the Brazilian numbers since his arrival at Real Madrid with those of Sterling at his age, there is a tie between the two with five goals, but Vinicius wins in assists with 13 by eight of the English. It remains to be seen if Vinicius equals or improves the 11 goals and 12 assists of Sterling with 19 years and if his progression, based on effort and work as recognized by the Brazilian, is so meteoric.
